Vestige of Credence: Chapter 1
Part 3: True Friendship
Ellara had a tendency to get lost in her own thoughts. She was still picturing Eva, this time at her chorus recital, when suddenly Kadden pushed her off the lightly pebbled path and behind a tall algae-covered rock. Startled, she peeked around the rock to see a Cumulus scout in the distance.
“You don’t always have to come to my rescue, Kadden,” she chided.
“You know that isn’t true, Ellara,” he responded as he nudged her arm. “What would you do if I weren’t around to keep you out of trouble?”
She smirked at him. “Life would be more fun ’cause I would always be up to no good,” she retorted with a raised eyebrow.
“Can’t argue with that,” he chuckled.
As they continued walking, Ellara thought to herself how typical that interaction was between them. They could encounter life-threatening situations and still find ways to amuse themselves. Watching Kadden walk along beside her, she savored their friendship. Though he was not related by blood, she often thought of him as a brother.
“Eel brain Ellara,” she could hear a child’s voice call her in her memory. Seven years old and being escorted into another room for an exam, she had learned to expect that kind of insult, but she did not anticipate what followed.
“Just shut your trap,” a boy in the class came to her defense. That was her first memory of Kadden and it made her chuckle. That was the start of the friendship closest to her heart.
She could remember many times from childhood when she almost felt defeated by sadness. She struggled through school and often took tests separately from the other children. Even through her upper education years, she was always treated different by her peers. Not Kadden, though. Somehow from the start he had always just been there and made her feel like she belonged in the world. Kadden was fairly tall for a Basalt man. His eyes were white, like that of any Basalt, and his body toned from hunting. He had deep brown hair that, at certain angles, almost seemed to have green streaks.
