The Perks of Being a Wallflower response

The Perks of Being a Wallflower response

Before I get to The Perks of Being a Wallflower, a couple of updates:

1. I will be traveling this weekend to see my lovely little cousin’s senior dance recital. Due to traveling I will not be posting a Movie MashUp on Monday.
2. Don’t forget to check out Rachel Morgan’s upcoming Who’s your favorite Faerie Tale Prince Blog Fest.
3. The Labyrinth Wall has found a wonderful editor and is undergoing some polishing. I have decided to begin making official publishing plans in the next couple months and will keep everyone updated.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

by Stephen Chbosky

(There are some minor spoilers concerning themes (no plot) ahead if you haven’t read the
book)
I managed to miss the boat on reading this book in high
school, but recently borrowed it from a friend. I have to admit I understand
why it has received so much love and praise. While it was a departure from my
typical fantasy genre, I still really appreciated it. Below are highlights of
what I took away:
The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Participate.

The participation message is something I could have benefited from as a teen and I still benefited from the reminder as an adult. As writers I
know we can relate to the living and writing balance struggle portrayed in this
story. What non-writer’s don’t usually grasp is that for us, writing is an important aspect of living. Writing helps us process, communicate and imagine. Still, we miss out on a lot if we do forget to get out participate  That is something I’m always hashing through myself. I set down the book
feeling rejuvenated about achieving balance.

Empathize.

Anytime we put ourselves in other people’s
shoes, we learn something. This was the case as I explored Charlie’s world and
thinking. It was very compelling to imagine his state of pain, yet not
understanding what caused it. So wrapping my head around that certainly gave me
a reminder of how uniquely each of us experience our different challenges. I
can’t seem to find any better words to express this accept that I was touched
by the insight into that specific character’s mind given his circumstances and
the people that surrounded him.

Favorite The Perks of Being a Wallflower Quotes:

“we accept the love we think we deserve.”
― Stephen Chbosky, The Perks of Being a Wallflower
“So, this is my life. And I want you to know that I am both
happy and sad and I’m still trying to figure out how that could be.”
― Stephen Chbosky, The Perks of Being a Wallflower
“And in that moment, I swear we were infinite.”
― Stephen Chbosky, The Perks of Being a Wallflower
I should also mention I got to see the film and felt it was
a lovely addition to the book. The acting was great and most importantly they
did justice to the essence of the story.
Did the participation message strike up motivation for you? Are you a fan of the book and movie? What is going on in your world?
